The Art of Collecting

Rauschenberg's "Buffalo II" 1964

Watching with great interest Christie's New York Contemporary Art auction. What's more interesting, perhaps, is the live commentary from non-artistic types who can't understand why a stainless steel bunny rabbit would be worth millions of dollars. Those who get it realize it is more about a feeling, a demeanor, than it is the actual materials. The soul of art is the feeling you get when you're with it--that passion. Those who don't get it, will never know the thrill of sitting in a room with a Jasper Johns and feeling the thrill.
