TACKERIA CAPTURES AUTUMN CUP AT SARATOGA POLO

The extension of the season at Saratoga Polo proved to be a fruitful one for the Tackeria squad as they claimed the Autumn Cup by defeating Los Piratas 10-5 this Tuesday.

Tackeria got out to an early lead and stayed there. On the strength of goals by 2 Tony Coppola and 3 Cuko Escapite, the score was 5-0 in the second chukker before Max Menini, who lead all scorers, finally put Las Piratas on the board. Menini proved to be The Pirates’ only offensive weapon, scoring a goal in every chukker but the first.

While Tackeria’s Jackie Czub ended the half with back-to-back markers, her team was held scoreless for the next two chukkers. By the sixth and final chukker, Las Piratas had started to reel in their opponents to within striking distance. However, Tackeria put the match to bed with another goal from Escapite and back-to-back tallies from Tab Orthwein at the end of regulation.

The next match for Saratoga Polo’s season extension is scheduled Friday, September 10 at 5:00pm. The final match of the season is scheduled for the following Sunday, September 12 at 5:00pm.

MILLPOND CLAIMS YLVISKAER CUP AT SARATOGA POLO

Neither local heroes Sugar Maple Farm (aka Las Piratas) nor a fierce thunderstorm could prevent Millpond from claiming the Ylvisaker Cup in a thrilling back and forth tournament final at Saratoga Polo on Tuesday. The Boston-based squad won the cup 8-7 in a match that went down to the wire.

Sugar Maple, also the runners-up in this year’s USPA President’s Cup, overcame an early deficit to tie the score 4-4 by halftime. They briefly took the lead twice in the fourth chukker, but Millpond had retied the score 6-6 by the time the rains came.

A torrential downpour with 2:04 left in chukker 5 sent players, spectators, and staff scrambling for cover as a time out was called due to the thunder and lightning. After the storm passed, the umpires made the determination to resume the game.

Millpond’s highest-rated professional, English-born Julian Daniels, scored first in the sixth and final chukker of regulation to give Millpond a 7-6 lead. Max Menini responded in short order to even things out. Willie Hartnett capped his leading-scorer performance with the game winner as the clock ran down.

Charlton-based Sugar Maple, sporting black uniforms (in contrast to their traditional green) and a fierce new moniker (Las Piratas), was led by season-long standout Menini with 3 markers. Omar Sosa and Henri DuToit, who joined up with Sugar Maple especially for this higher-goal tournament, contributed 2 tallies apiece.

The KPMG Best Playing Pony Award went to Willie Hartnett’s mount Barman.

The next major tournament at Saratoga Polo is the prestigious annual Hector and Susan Barrantes Memorial Cup. The next match at Saratoga Polo is the Sole Cup on Friday, August 13.
