Goshen clinches
victory from Henley House 11-10 in Overtime |
Sunday, January 9th, '05
WELLINGTON,
FL – Eight-goaler Sugar Erskine scored seven goals, including the
game-winner on a 15-yard near side with 5:16 left in overtime, to
lift Goshen over Henley House 11-10 in the 22-goal Iglehart Cup
final Sunday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
Erskine picked up a loose ball after teammate Pancho Bensadon
dribbled down the field guarded by two defenders.
“I had a man on my outside and the ball was sitting there,” said
Erskine. “I just hit it.”
This was the second consecutive final Erskine and Bensadon won at
International Polo Club Palm Beach. They were teammates on Isla
Carroll, which won the Stanford Financial Group U.S. Open in
mid-April.
“You can’t beat that,” said Erskine.
Goshen led most of the game, but Henley House tied the game at 8-8
early in the fifth chukker on 6-goaler Francisco Lanusse’s goal.
Erskine countered with a pair of 30-yard penalty shots to give
Goshen a 10-8 advantage with 2:02 remaining in the fifth. American
10-goaler Adam Snow sliced the margin to 10-9 on a 20-yard backhand
with 39 seconds remaining in the fifth chukker.
Both teams missed scoring opportunities in the sixth chukker before
Henley House was awarded an automatic goal via the Penalty 1 rule to
tie the game at 10-10 with 2:42 left in the game. A Penalty 1 is
usually awarded when a player is fouled in the goal area.
Bensadon finished with three goals for Goshen (2-0), which received
a goal by handicap to start the game. Patron Irvin Abell and
4-goaler Stewart Armstrong did not play, although both were
effective defensively late in the game.
Snow and Lanusse finished with four goals each for Henley House
(1-1). Patron Wayne Grover, playing in his first high-goal
tournament, and 5-goaler Carlucho Arellano, did not score.
“I felt like we were playing catch-up the last four chukkers,” said
the 26-year-old Arellano. “We had our opportunities and we missed
them.”
Henley House led 2-1 midway through the first chukker but Goshen
scored four consecutive goals and never trailed, although there were
four ties in the game.
Kate, owned and ridden by Adam Snow, was named Best Playing Pony.
Four-goaler Stewart Armstrong of Goshen, who played a strong
defensive game, was selected as Most Valuable Player.
Iglehart Cup Championship match team rosters:

The 22-goal Iglehart Cup, which returned after a one-year hiatus,
kicked off the second season of high-goal polo at International Polo
Club Palm Beach, the premier polo club in the United States. The
tournament is named for one of polo’s leading families, Hall of
Famers Stewart and Philip Iglehart. The tournament was not played in
2004 because of scheduling conflicts. Tommy Lee Jones’ San Saba was
the 2003 champion and John Goodman’s Isla Carroll won the tournament
in 2002.
The 2005 season features six high-goal tournaments – three 22-goal
tourneys and
three 26-goal tournaments. Following the Iglehart Cup is the Joe
Barry Memorial
Cup and the Ylvisaker Cup. The 26-goal season opens with the Hall of
Fame Cup, followed by the C.V. Whitney Cup and concluding with the
Stanford Financial Group U.S. Open.

Henley House, Goshen Register Wins to Advance
to Iglehart Cup Final
By Y.A. Teitelbaum
Jan. 2, 2005
WELLINGTON, FL – Ten-goaler Adam Snow scored six goals to lead
Henley House over Crab Orchard 11-9 in a semifinal of the 22-goal
Iglehart Cup polo tournament Sunday at International Polo Club Palm
Beach.
Henley House will play Goshen, which defeated San Saba 9-6 behind
five goals from Sugar Erskine, Sunday at 3 p.m. in the championship
game.
The tournament is named for one of polo’s leading families, Hall of
Famers Stewart and Philip Iglehart. The tournament was not played in
2004 because of scheduling conflicts. Tommy Lee Jones’ San Saba was
the 2003 champion and John Goodman’s Isla Carroll won the tournament
in 2002.
Snow scored three unanswered goals in the fourth chukker to spark
Henley House to an 8-4 margin. Crab Orchard responded with three
consecutive goals in the fifth chukker, two by Memo Gracida, to cut
the margin to 8-7 with 4:50 remaining. Henley House’s Carlucho
Arellano stopped the scoring run with a breakaway with 4:01 left in
the fifth and connected on a neck shot with 5:40 left in the sixth
chukker to increase the margin to 10-7.
Agustin Merlos converted two 30-yard penalty shots in a 92-second
span to bring Crab Orchard within one, 10-9, with 2:38 left in the
game. Snow missed a 30-yard penalty at the two-minute mark, but
Arellano stole the ball from Gracida and dribbled in to give Henley
House an 11-9 lead with 1:20 remaining.
“It was a great start,” said Snow. “We only had one practice. I
tried to be on the outside and let Francisco (Lanusse) and Carlucho
(Arellano) handle the ball. I would pick my spots.”
Henley House scored the first two goals and never trailed in the
game, although there was one tie. Arellano finished with five goals
for Henley House (1-0). Wayne Grover and Lanusse did not score.
Merlos led Crab Orchard (0-1) with five goals while Gracida added
three goals. Patron George Rawlings and 17-year-old Julio Gracida
did not score.
The second semifinal started slowly as both teams missed numerous
scoring opportunities early. They both came alive in the fifth
chukker, combining for six goals. After Pancho Bensadon 10-yard
forehand gave Goshen a 4-2 lead 15 seconds into the fifth chukker,
San Saba responded with three unanswered goals, one each by Gaston
Von Wernich, Tommy Lee Jones and Toto Collardin. Erskine countered
with two goals in a 49-second span near the end of the fifth chukker
to put Goshen on top for good. He added two more consecutive goals
in the first three minutes of the sixth chukker to increase the
margin to 8-5 with 4:26 left in the game.
“We started getting our rhythm going by the end of the game,” said
Bensadon.
“Both teams missed goals,” said Erskine. “It’s the first game of the
season, but there’s not much difference between the teams. We got a
little luckier.”
Bensadon finished with two goals and Stewart Armstrong scored one
goal for Goshen (1-0). Patron Irvin Abell did not score. Von Wernich
and Collardin scored two goals each for San Saba (0-1) while Jones
and Hector Galindo added one goal apiece.
