HPA National Club Championships

23 January 2005

HPA NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS PROVE A SUCCESSFUL CHANGE FROM THE NATIONS CUP.

Fourteen teams entered the first National Club Championships – six at the 2 to 6 goal level and eight in the 8 to 12 goal. Six clubs were represented RCBPC, Druids Lodge, Ash Farm, Belmont, Inglesham and Park Lane with three arenas holding matches throughout the tournament. Finals day took place in glorious sunshine with over a hundred and sixty arena guests, friends, players and arena enthusiasts enjoying lunch with up to three hundred spectators gathering to watch the afternoon finals. In the six goal it was Belmont Polo Club versus The Berkshire. Both teams had met each other in the early stage of the tournament with Belmont winning by a single goal 14-13. Revenge was there for the taking on finals day however Adolfo Casabal (3) well worth a four handicap had other ideas as he David Eve (1) and Alan Ruzzaman (2) handed out a 19-15 defeat of The Berkshire. In the 12 goal final it was again Belmont and Berkshire sides contesting for silver. The result of 14-13 reflects how close the game was as Nacho Gonzalez (8) ably assisted by Adolfo Casabal (3) and Clive Reid (1) pipped Paul Oberschneider (1), Hugo Amaya (5) and Oscar Mancini (6) by the all important goal. In the 12 Goal finals Nacho Gonzalez received the magnum of Victor Champagne for the Most Valued Player Award while his team mate Adolfo Casabal took this honour in the 6 goal final. Ella Weedon and Flavian Pecatte have to be congratulated for producing beautifully turned out ponies and each won a magnum of Champagne for the Best Turned Out String for Max Charlton and Hugo Amaya respectively. Paul Sweeney and Michael Amoore, last years’s trophy winners were both on hand to present the amazing trophy to Clive Reid. David Woodd, Chief Executive of the HPA was also there and thanks must go to the HPA for their continuing support of the tournament.
