THE RUN FOR THE ROSE'

Derby Day is on the its way and, though there are great wine connoisseurs among the horsy set, one hardly thinks of the wine in hand as you're cheering your pick toward the finish line on Derby Day.

Brian Zealer, a California winemaker whose recent offerings in conjunction with Churchill Downs were released on April 20th (just in time for Derby Day on May 5th in Lexington, Kentucky), hopes to change all that.

"As a winemaker, I am thrilled to be blending wines for such a prestigious institution as Churchill Downs that people across the nation can enjoy," says Zealear. "My intent is to produce wines that are as graceful in style as Thoroughbreds."

This is an exciting new offering and we are proud of the quality available in the Churchill Downs Wine collection," said Laura Botner, director of marketing at Churchill Downs.

"The detail and care that went into the selection of these exclusive wines make them deserving of the Churchill Downs name. These exclusive wines are a first for Churchill Downs and allow us to blend our name that is synonymous with excellence in racing with wines that are handcrafted and represent the best selections from the growing regions of California."

Churchill Downs Wines will be offered in three lines. The initial offering will include a teaming of two lines: SILKS and TWIN SPIRES®. SILKS, will feature a range of select premium Californian Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

TWIN SPIRES®, a boutique reserve quality wine produced from the most elite California vineyards in very limited quantities, will provide Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. T

The third, WINNER'S CIRCLE, a premium collection of the most popular wines will consist of Rosé, Chardonnay and Merlot, and will make its debut this summer.

As graceful as Thoroughbreds?  Well, we haven't tried the wine...and we all know that Thoroughbreds, while graceful, can be something of a handful.  We'll let you know....

In the meantime, cheers!  And may the best horse win.
